Do you think I should start using birth control this fall, in time for college?

I graduated high school last month and will begin college in August. I am a virgin, and although saving myself for marriage would be most ideal, I am a realist and know this will probably not happen. Do you think I should start taking "the pill" before college or should I just rely on condoms alone? Of course if I take the pill I will also use condoms to protect from STDs. One of my friends said that being on the pill would "encourage" me to have sex. I dunno what that means...but your opinions would be great!
