What are the pros and cons to jointed stirrup irons?

I don't have any experience with joint pain, so maybe they're good for that idk but I've ridden in jointed stirrups and honestly, the only difference I noticed was the price! Wouldn't recommend them from my own experience, but people must like them for some reason I guess? =/
